Statement der Jury: The idea of planting fruit trees across the entire city of Vienna – now at ten locations and developed over many years – is truly exemplary. The jury was particularly impressed by the decentralized concept, which engages a broad spectrum of residents in both fruit growing and appreciation for local produce. The low-threshold approach that encourages people to harvest and enjoy fruit themselves raises awareness of natural resources. The strong collaboration between volunteers, civic initiatives, and the City of Vienna makes this project an inspiring model of sustainability and community spirit.

Category 2: Biodiversity and climate change adaptation in gardens and green spaces

Statement der Jury: Company gardens with ecological motivation are a growing trend, and “Forestline” sets a benchmark. The project brilliantly demonstrates how corporate spaces can be transformed into true natural oases – benefiting people, wildlife, and the urban microclimate. Green roofs and facades, rainwater management, and climate-resilient planting combine functionality with high-quality spaces for employees. The emphasis on biodiversity and the long-term impact of trees, intended to outlive the building, is particularly inspiring. Extensive public outreach further reinforces its exemplary role for other companies.

Statement der Jury: The project impresses through the diversity of habitats used and their distribution across various urban areas. The peat-free perennial production in the municipal nursery is particularly noteworthy. Appealing and informative signage communicates knowledge and engages the public. The use of biochar and mycorrhiza introduces an innovative approach to urban ecological development. The combination of staff expertise and strong citizen participation provides a solid foundation for sustainable urban ecology. QR codes and informational brochures create a direct learning experience for all interested parties.

Statement der Jury: The project impressively demonstrates how even small spaces can contribute to biodiversity. With great passion, an impressive variety of plant species has been combined while still accommodating human needs. Notably, the garden relies entirely on containers – a situation common for many urban residents. This project proves that nature can thrive in pots when people actively participate as part of the solution, making an important contribution to urban ecological life.

Category 3: Trends for the future: new knowledge - new diversity

Statement der Jury: The DNA Check is an innovative product that analyzes garden biodiversity without capturing or harming animals. Its ease of use clearly shows whether measures to promote biodiversity are effective. At a time of drastic insect declines across Europe, it allows interested individuals to educate themselves, take action, and document their ecological impact. For public gardens, it provides objective data as proof of quality. The gentle method ensures that insects remain unharmed, making the DNA Check an exemplary model of practical, modern conservation.
