European Award for Ecological Gardening 2025

The initiative Natur im Garten, represented by the Federal Province of Lower Austria as well as the “European Garden Association - Natur im Garten International”, the „Natur im Garten“ GmbH and the “Natur im Garten” Service GmbH will award the “European Award for Ecological Gardening“ as a recognition of outstanding achievements in the field of ecological gardening. The Award, for which participants from all over Europe are eligible, will be handed over by an international expert jury.

From November 2024, we will be looking for new solutions and ideas for high-quality recreational spaces and a good shared future as part of the European Award for Ecological Gardening 2025. Applications are possible until 31st May 2025.

You can take part in the following three categories:

Everyone looks out for themselves? Joint commitment strengthens society. Selfless people are often happier and more successful than egoists. Economists also recognize that helpfulness pays off in the end. Is “One for all, all for one” also the motto of your project?

Whether it's school gardens or green spaces in community housing projects, cross-generational or intercultural gardening or the "neighborhood oasis" around the corner: we're highlighting innovative, ecological gardens that focus on community and social aspects and serve as role models. Regardless of their size, they can be used in a variety of ways by young and old and include the region or the surrounding area. Aspects of environmental justice and climate protection should also be reflected in the projects submitted.

Biodiversity means variety - variety of different habitats, species richness of animals, plants, fungi and microorganisms. Nature and species conservation begins right on our doorstep. Climate change is also constantly presenting us with new challenges. Therefore, we need intelligent ways to adapt gardens and green spaces. Projects can be submitted in this category, from renaturalized commercial areas, city parks, school gardens, public green spaces to open spaces in company or residential buildings and private gardens.

We would like to see a lively mix of implemented submissions, all of which should promote biodiversity, demonstrate adaptation to climate change and inspire others to follow suit - through inventiveness, new solutions or innovations. At the same time, they should have the potential to initiate new projects. Diverse structures in natural design, careful handling of soil and the environment through ecological care are key for this category. The innovative use of site-appropriate plants is just as much in focus as rainwater management, the positive impact on the microclimate and, last but not least, climate-friendly gardening.

Have you developed services, business models or technologies for the green sector - analogue or digital? Are you taking unusual paths with this innovation? Does your idea follow the principle of a closed loop? Or do your products and services perhaps specifically contribute to preserving the environment, promoting social justice and creating economic value? The pioneering use of artificial intelligence also falls into this category. The implementation of the innovation is largely complete and initial experience of the effects of the innovation is already available?

The European Award for Ecological Gardening 2025 honors products, processes and services that sustainably improve ecological gardening through innovation and progress. Because positive changes that influence and enrich the lives of a wide variety of target groups have always come about through innovation. Use the European Award for Ecological Gardening 2025 as a platform to show where innovations can take us.

The competition is open to anyone. The competition particularly targets gardeners, planning offices, municipalities and local communities, educational institutions, research institutes, initiatives and associations from all European nations.

Submissions can only be made online starting from 15th November 2024 until 31st May 2025. For all categories, the online submission form must be completed in the desired category. Participants undertake to answer all questions truthfully. For each application, appropriate documentation must be provided that provides evidence of the special ecological, sustainable and social significance of the project by means of plans, photographs, descriptions, etc. By means of the uploaded documents, applicants have the opportunity to describe their submitted work and thereby give the Jury an impression of their project. Participation is only possible within the participation period.

An independent and expert committee nominates the best submissions per category based on the assessment criteria and selects the winning project in each category. The competition concludes with a festive awards ceremony, at which the nominated projects are presented to the audience and awarded a nomination certificate. The highlight of the evening is the awarding of prizes to the first-place projects.
